A HARARE man will spend the next 18 months behind bars after assaulting his hospitalised wife accusing her of lying about her medical condition.
Benjamin Chida (39) had initially been sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment before 12 months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Presiding magistrate, Stanford Mambanje heard that on December 23 last year, Chida assaulted his wife Florence Mashuva with an electric cord at their Highfield home accusing her of lying about her medical condition.

Chida visited his wife at her hospital bed and assaulted her all over the body with open hands, leading to his arrest.
In a related matter, another Harare man, Joseph Nyakurende, was sentenced to an effective seven-month jail term after he attempted to strangle his wife after she questioned his three-day absence from home.
Nyakurende (32) had pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Mbare magistrate Shelly Zvenyika, but was found guilty of the offence.
Allegations against him were that on January 13 he arrived home after being away for three days and his wife Talent Mapfura quizzed him about his absence.
This did not go down well with Nyakurete, who then became furious and grabbed Mupfura by the neck and threatened to strangle her.
