| Sulu to help Tokwe-Mukorsi victims |
The Dendera musician told the Daily News yesterday that his assistance would target young children.
“We will concentrate on schoolchildren who have been generally left out of the assistance that has been availed to flood victims so far,” said Suluman.
“We will donate books and other necessities. We are currently in the process of raising funds for the exercise.”
NBCZ president Keith Guzah confirmed Sulu’s forthcoming Tokwe-Mukorsi visit to delegates at a symposium hosted by his organisation this week.
“When you hear about the Suluman Chimbetu Charity Trust please donate. We will be in Tokwe-Mukorsi with Sulu to give books and other school materials to the flood victims,” Guzah said.
“We have noted that a lot of support that has been given to the people in the area was mostly food and more food but we are saying let’s empower the schoolchildren through books,” Guzah said.
The NBCZ president also said the Tokwe-Mukorsi project is not the only one Chimbetu will give help to , but will also assist in other initiatives which will be announced in due course.
This comes as government has appealed for $19 694 093 from the International community to meet urgent humanitarian needs for affected communities in the Tokwe-Mukorsi basin.
The money is needed to relocate the victims as well as finance the provision of food, shelter, safe water and other basic needs.
The government has so far identified Masangula, Chisase and Chingwizi as relocation sites. Currently, schools are being used as temporary sites before flood victims are moved to the relocation sites.
The Orchestra Dendera Kings frontman also performed at the symposium where the announcement was made.
The International Organisation on Migration (IOM) has advanced $750 000 towards dealing with the disaster.
Apart from emergency shelter and transport for evacuation, the IOM is also providing health services like mobile clinics, health screening, referrals and basic health care in collaboration with the ministry of Health and Child Care.
