Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has ridiculed President Jacob Zuma, calling him a “domkop” (fool) while slamming the rest of the ANC and union federation Cosatu for having “sold out”.
Malema also apologised to the people of Eastern Cape for his role in having former president Thabo Mbeki fired and replacing him with Zuma. He said this was a “terrible mistake”.
“We treated one of your own in a manner that was not correct. We did not listen to the silent communication and advice from President Mbeki. The people of Eastern Cape must find it in their hearts to forgive us for leading such an uniformed revolution.
“Today, Nigeria is number one economically in Africa because of that ‘domkop’ we have here for a president. The man can’t think. Don’t mistake a big head for a big mind. There are no ideas coming from that man,” he said at an EFF rally in Mdantsane, East London, yesterday.
Malema said this was where the importance of education was highlighted, a reference to Zuma and Mbeki’s different educational backgrounds.
“We had too many expectations from a Standard 2 (Grade 4) graduate. We have replaced an economist, Thabo Mbeki, with a Standard 2 graduate,” he said.
Malema said he was at the forefront of Mbeki’s axing because he and his ANC Youth League leadership were misled, and now the country was paying for that mistake.
“We are in a mess because we removed Mbeki and replaced him with nothing,” he said, adding that through the EFF he was trying to fix his mistake and that he would not rest until Zuma was out of office.
He accused Zuma of protecting monopoly white capital, adding the president was conniving with capitalists.
“They killed your fathers in Marikana, you the people of the Eastern Cape, of all the people you must be angrier because your parents left here to look for bread, but were killed in Marikana and they arrested those who survived,” he said.
He said ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa was worse than Zuma as he had agitated for the people of Eastern Cape to be killed in Marikana.
He said Ramaphosa was a Buffalo soldier, an apparent reference to his bid to buy a buffalo for R18 million.
Malema also lambasted ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe as a “sellout” and asked why he did not visit Marikana after the tragedy.
“Mantashe has deserted you. He regards himself as someone from Gauteng, not Eastern Cape,” he said.
Malema said voting for the ANC meant voting for Zuma’s cows to have a R1 million cattle kraal and a swimming pool he did not need.
“Why did Zuma steal our money to build a swimming pool because he does not need it? Can you imagine Zuma and his many wives wearing a costume ready to swim,” Malema asked, triggering loud laughter from his supporters.
He said the EFF was the only vanguard for the poor and working class as Cosatu has sold out by listening to Ramaphosa, a reference to an agreement struck this week around the reinstatement of suspended Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.
“How can Irvin Jim and Zwelinzima Vavi listen to Ramaphosa, a billionaire, about how a union should conduct itself? EFF is going to form its own union to fight for the working class.”
